Mr. Mitsch was the premier American hybridizer for over 50 years. He also grew gladiolus and iris before concentrating exclusively on daffodils in 1941. He grew many fine flowers in all divisions and expanded considerably the flowers available in Divisions 5 – 7 which were then often referred to as the “minor divisions,” and which were largely neglected at the time. In 1978, his daughter Elise and her husband Richard Havens began issuing catalogs in their name. They continued the legacy of breeding fine flowers in all divisions.
